Recently we held a competition on our Facebook page. Some of the fantastic businesses that were highlighted are people that we have had the pleasure of meeting, or even treating over the past few years. Our mission with these business profiles are to highlight some businesses that deserve to be seen! Check out At Reilly’s Kitchen in our recent “interview”.

What year did your company start?

I started my company in 2013.

What exactly does your business offer?

My business offers a large range of catering needs, from varied functions including weddings, birthdays etc, corporate lunches, fundraisers to also making portion sized freezer meals in 2 sizes.

Who are the main people in your business that people will meet?

I am the main person for the business, the one that will meet and discuss options, menus and plans but I also have an amazing team that I can call onto assist, we all work together and present as a front of professionalism in uniform, ethics and conduct. My job is to take over your event from you and run it so that you don’t have to do a thing except sit back and enjoy!

Any interesting stories about how your business came to be?

I completed a 4 year chef’s apprenticeship from 16 years of age. Then I went on to have another full time career job that I loved but after 23 years I was searching for something more. I really just wanted to stay home and cook, and it was when the cooking shows were just starting up on TV. I started cooking dinner parties for friends to experiment on them. One day a friend told me I was going to cook a 4 course dinner for 10 people, full table service for her In-laws. I was terrified but the adrenaline kicked in and it was amazing! A month later I was hired to Cater for an AGM for 120 people! That was the clincher! I then went part time in my full time job and 7 years later I am now catering full time.  I then branched out a couple of years ago and added BowWow Birthday Pawties to my business as well, catering for dog parties and home-made treats.

The hardest period of time was in July 2017 when I was stationery in my car when I was involved in a serious car crash which should have claimed my life. I was unable to fully work for 2 months, but with my injuries still healing I went back to modified catering earlier in a smaller manageable capacity as I missed it so much.

What innovative ideas/changes has your business made to survive the COVID-19 downturn?

I have been finding it hard to get business when there is a shortage of money. People think they cannot afford a caterer when they are unemployed and trying to survive. Of course due to the limitation of group numbers too I have lost a lot of large functions that I would normally be hired for. I have advertised more, reached out and joined local community groups offering samples and free delivery. I also believe with all the bulk impulse buying that people were doing, they are now forced to do their own cooking to use up supplies!!

I am a loyal supporter of supporting other local businesses, and as a caterer it is important to buy mainly local SA produce. Anyone that knows me knows I am passionate (and a little bit obsessed!) about what I do and I cook with a love that you can taste in my food.
