Foot Neuroma Excision
Performed as a day procedure
Written by Dr Mike Smith
You have ball of foot pain and have been told you have a ‘neuroma’
First it helps to understand what a neuroma is
A morton’s neuroma is a painful condition that affects the ball of your foot. It is a painful enlargement / thickening of the nerve that supplies sensation to the skin between your toes. Most commonly these occur in the 2nd and 3rd webspaces of the foot.
Classically people describe the sensation of walking with a pebble in their shoe. Nerve irritation can cause a tingling sensation, numbness, or burning
Morton’s Neuroma:
Making the Diagnosis
The diagnosis is confirmed clinically with a compression squeeze test. The pain of the neuroma as well as a palpable ‘click’ may be heard during this test.
Ultrasound is also commonly performed to confirm the diagnosis.
What does the procedure involve
The technique for neuroma surgery, involves making a small longitudinal incision on the top of the webspace of the affected toes.
Following superficial dissection, the offending neuroma is identified. The neuroma is excised proximal to the bifurcation of the nerves, to ensure that there are no residual branches of the nerve that may cause pain during weight bearing. The incision is closed with an absorbable suture, and a bandage is applied.
