Business Profile Chameleon Art Rental
Recently we held a competition on our Facebook page. Some of the fantastic businesses that were highlighted are people that we have had the pleasure of meeting, or even treating over the past few years. In this case, our competition was viewed on our Instagram! Our mission with these business profiles are to highlight some businesses that deserve to be seen! Check out Chameleon Art Rental in our recent “interview”.
What year did your company start?
Chameleon Art Rental started mid 2019, this is when we began contacting and signing talented South Australian artists.
What exactly does your business offer?
At Chameleon Art Rental we link local businesses and homes with South Australian art. We facilitate the rental of original art allowing the opportunity to rotate art every 12 months to brighten and refresh home, office and commercial spaces whilst supporting South Australian artists.
Who are the main people in your business that people will meet?
My husband, Mark and I (Jacqui) are the driving force behind Chameleon Art Rental. The business is still in it’s infancy, so no other help needed at this stage, hopefully we can grow to the point we need extra hands.
Any interesting stories about how your business came to be?
The combination of knowing we could improve the ambience of homes/businesses around Adelaide and at the same time support talented local South Australian artists pushed us to dive in the deep end.
The idea to rent art, actually came from Mark’s Dad about 15 years ago. However at that time, Mark was engrossed in the early stages of his financial planning career. Over the years, Mark was constantly reminded of the idea after seeing bad or very old art in offices he visited. It was a couple of years ago that Mark mentioned the idea to me and I loved it. I come from a commercial photography background so I was excited to bring my skills to the business. If it wasn’t for each of us spurring the other on, it never would have got off the ground.
What period of time has been the hardest for you before COVID-19?
Every step has been a steep learning curve. We have established this business from scratch while working full time in other roles. Everything has been a blank canvas, which has its pros and cons. We are essentially a medium between artists and homes/businesses, but this means we have to appeal to both parties to be a success. Obviously the first part was getting artists on board. We established a structure that we felt would appeal to artists but also allow us to survive as a business. It was a hairy experience initialling engaging with artists to see if they were interested in what we had to offer. I’m really pleased to say the artists appear to love the concept as much as us and have been really encouraging and willing to come on board.
What innovative ideas/changes has your business made to survive the COVID-19 downturn?
Luckily, we both still have our regular jobs but it has put a dent in Chameleon’s progress. Understandably, client’s just arent willing to make the discretionary spend of this type of offer at the moment. Hopefully, confidence in the economy continues to lift and client’s take that opportunity to support local. On the contrary artists have been busy creating in isolation so we’ve had an influx of artists signing up.

Tell us more!
Art comes in many forms, as do artists. I work in Allied Health in the disability sector and feel very strongly about making Chameleon Art Rental inclusive. The contract conditions we offer to artists is the same for people of all physical and intellectual abilities. People with disabilities are free to express themselves through art without physical, verbal or cognitive barriers. Creating art not only brings fulfilment to the artist but also bring fulfilment to the art appreciator.
